Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word association. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that it was not the right place for her. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate was soon gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her show in 1996.
